We purchase supplements to improve our health right? We take them because we are deficient in nutrients and experiencing negative health effects of these deficiencies that impact our daily lives.
However not all may be as it seems when it comes to adding supplements to improve your health. As far back as 1999, a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association (JANA, winter, 1999) showed only 5 of 196 nutritional products randomly tested from health food stores proved to be both non toxic and effective. The study found that the other 191 products or about 97.5% to be either toxic or ineffective or both. 19 years later things haven't improved greatly in the manufacturing process of bulk and supermarket brand supplements. So here's some information that I really want you to understand...
Excipients are binders, fillers and 'glues' that are non nutritive substances in many branded supplements. In most cases these excipients test as undesirable for your health. Besides these undesirables that can be found inside the capsules that you are ingesting many products also contain undesirable encapsulating agents.
Questionable Excipient and Encapsulating Agents to look out for...
Here's a list of questionable excipients commonly found in nutritional products:
- Magnesium stearate - a cheap lubricating agent, research shows to be immune compromising
- Methyl paraben - a benzoate family member, a known cancer causing agent
- Microcrystalline cellulose - a cheap filler
- Methacrylic copolymer - methacryilic acid, a component of the methacryilic acid copolymer, has been reported to act as a teratogen in rat embryo cultures.
- Triethyl citrate - a plasticizer
- Titanium dioxide - used for colour
- Corn starch - typically from cheap GMO corn, can invoke allergic reactions
- Talcum powder - a common excipient rarely listed on product labels, a suspected carcinogen
Here's a list of questionable encapsulating agents:
- D&C red #33
- Polyethylene glycol
- Red ferric oxide-orange shade
- Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate
- Propyl p-hydroxybenzoate
- Sodium acetate
- Sodium metabisulfite
These lists are not exhaustive but are a quick reference to some of the more common things to look out for. I encourage you to do a little digging and get familiar with other questionable ingredients or even when you are at the store quickly google any ingredients that you are unfamiliar with, prior to purchasing the product, to see if there are any warnings that you should be aware of.
Are you wasting your money on cheaper supplements?
Given the alarming statistic above showing that 97.5% of the 196 products tested being either toxic or ineffective to your health, it raises the question of if supplements are even worth taking at all?
I personally believe that they are, but to ensure you are not wasting your money or putting your health at risk, you have to really understand what you are taking and look at the ingredients on the bottle to make wise choices for your health. This will ensure that you are not just throwing your money away and not getting the benefits that you desire.
So what should you do?
My advice to you is to always purchase 'binder and filler free products' and in most instances you will also find that these products also use natural encapsulating agents like tapioca capsules. These products are usually all natural and will give your health the biggest lift possible.
Products that boast about being binder and filler free also take great care to include the highest quality ingredients available inside the capsule and most are pure and non synthetic versions. This ensures that your body is getting the best form of the nutrient that can have the greatest positive effect on your health.
This is the reason that I developed my own line of Pure high quality natural ingredient, binder and filler free supplements that are encased in natural 100% safe capsules
In my game I see so many products come onto the market that really don't benefit the user at all and I was sick and tired of these products not delivering on their promise of a healthier life.
So I took it into my own hands and started to manufacture the highest quality supplements that deliver on their promise and positively impact your health. I'm proud of my Pure Natural Supplements and get so much fantastic feedback from my customers as their health improves, that I feel blessed everyday to be in a position of positively impacting people's lives.
I encourage all of you to really check the ingredient list on the supplements that you are buying and even if you are not purchasing my Pure Natural Supplements, buy binder and filler free supplements that are in natural capsules. Your body and health will thank you for it!
